South Carolina Weekend Weather Alert: Columbia Faces Heavy Rain and Storms Through Saturday
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Weekend plans across the Midlands may be disrupted as heavy rain and strong thunderstorms are expected to move into the Columbia area by Saturday afternoon, forecasters warn.
Storm Timing and Impacts
According to the National Weather Service, rain chances will rise sharply Friday evening and remain high through late Saturday. Some areas could see up to a half-inch or more of rainfall, with storms producing gusty winds and frequent lightning.
Emergency managers urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel during downpours and to keep devices charged in case of power outages.
Columbia Metro and Surrounding Areas at Risk
The Columbia metro is expected to take the brunt of the storm activity Saturday. Nearby towns, including Lexington, Irmo, and Cayce, should also prepare for localized flooding.
Outdoor events may face disruptions, and football fans heading to Williams-Brice Stadium could encounter traffic backups if storms peak during the afternoon hours.
Relief After the Weekend
Conditions will begin to ease by Sunday, with only a slight chance of showers and partly sunny skies.
Forecasters expect a quieter stretch of weather early next week, with highs in the lower 80s through Monday before dipping into the upper 70s by Wednesday as drier fall air settles in.
