Florida Weather Update: Heavy Rain (2–4 Inches) and Dangerous Surf Threaten East Coast This Week

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Florida’s east coast is bracing for a hazardous week as heavy rain and dangerous surf combine to raise flooding risks and life-threatening rip current conditions.

Rip Current Risks at Beaches

The National Weather Service in Melbourne reports that beaches in Volusia, Brevard, and Indian River counties remain under a high rip current risk, while St. Lucie and Martin counties face a moderate risk. Surf is running 2 to 4 feet, and officials warn swimmers that the currents could be deadly even when skies appear clear.

Residents and visitors are strongly urged to stay out of the ocean and follow all posted beach safety warnings.

Heavy Rain and Flooding Concerns

A stalled front and deep tropical moisture are fueling widespread showers and thunderstorms across central and east Florida. Rain chances are as high as 80% in Daytona Beach, Melbourne, and Vero Beach, with localized flooding possible in low-lying and urban areas.

Cities such as Orlando, Sanford, and Leesburg may see roadway ponding during afternoon downpours. Drivers are advised to slow down, use caution, and never attempt to drive through flooded roads.

Storm Pattern to Continue Through the Week

The unsettled weather is expected to persist through much of the week, with daily storm chances remaining above 70% along the east-central corridor. Additional advisories could be issued if rainfall totals climb beyond the 2–4 inch range currently forecast.
