Expert Says North Carolina Could See Stunning Fall Colors if Cool, Sunny Weather Holds

BOONE, N.C. — Western North Carolina could be in for an exceptional fall color season this year, according to Appalachian State University biology professor Howard Neufeld, widely known as the region’s “Fall Color Guy.”

Weather Conditions Set the Stage

Neufeld explained that while Hurricane Helene left some impact on the mountains, conditions have since improved, with the region bouncing back. He said the most important weather window for predicting autumn hues begins in mid-September.

“I think we’re on track to have a good fall color season. July was exceptionally hot, but August was exceptionally cool,” Neufeld said. “If it consistently gets cooler and we get a preponderance of sunny days, we’re on track to have a really good fall color season. But if we get a heat wave, it’ll dilute the red colors, and it’ll shift them later in the season.”

When and Where to See Peak Color

According to Neufeld, peak color will vary by elevation:

  • High elevations: late September to early October
  • Mid-elevations: later in October
  • Valleys: early November

He also noted that North Carolina offers one of the longest fall foliage seasons in the country, with colors stretching from the mountains to the coast through Thanksgiving.

Tourism Impact

Fall colors are expected to be one of the biggest tourism draws for western North Carolina this year, bringing visitors to popular scenic routes like the Blue Ridge Parkway and national parks across the region. Communities and businesses are already preparing for the seasonal influx of travelers seeking the best leaf-peeping spots.

With cooler mornings already arriving in the mountains, locals and visitors alike are eager to see if 2025 delivers on its promise of a spectacular autumn display.
