Inmate Dies After Cardiac Arrest at Surry County Detention Center
SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities say an inmate at the Surry County Detention Center died after suffering cardiac arrest during a medical emergency over the weekend.
Medical Emergency Reported
The Surry County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that on Sunday, August 31, staff at the detention center saw an inmate experience a medical crisis. Officers immediately began treatment on 63-year-old James Grayson Hall Jr., who went into cardiac arrest during the response.
Life-Saving Efforts Unsuccessful
Emergency medical crews from Surry County EMS arrived at the facility and attempted life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, Hall was pronounced dead at the scene.
State Investigators Notified
Following the death, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was notified, as is standard procedure in in-custody deaths. Officials have not released further details on Hall’s health history or the cause of the medical emergency that led to the cardiac arrest.
The incident adds to broader discussions across North Carolina about inmate health, emergency medical response times, and transparency in county detention facilities.
