North Carolina Firefighter Shot While Responding to Fire Alarm Call

ELLERBE, N.C. — A North Carolina firefighter was shot Monday morning while responding to what appeared to be a routine fire alarm call, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Gunfire at Emergency Call Scene

Authorities said one fire truck and a firefighter in a personal vehicle arrived at the scene in Ellerbe when they were unexpectedly met with gunfire. One firefighter was struck in the shooting.

Deputies rushed to the location and quickly took a suspect into custody.

Firefighter Airlifted to Trauma Center

The injured firefighter was airlifted to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill trauma center for emergency treatment. Officials have not released the firefighter’s name or current condition.

Suspect Charged With Assault

Investigators said the suspect is facing two counts of assault on emergency personnel with a firearm and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury.

The State Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist. As of Monday afternoon, agents were still collecting evidence, and officials have not disclosed a possible motive.

The shooting has shaken the small community of Ellerbe, where firefighters and first responders are being praised for their continued commitment to public safety despite the risks they face.
