Central Illinois Forecast: Crisp Mornings, Comfortable 70s and 80s Through Friday

LINCOLN, IL – Central Illinois is enjoying a stretch of early fall-like weather this week, with crisp mornings and sunny afternoons expected through Friday. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln says the region will stay mostly dry, with just a slight uptick in rain chances on Thursday.

Sunny Days and Cool Nights Across Central Illinois

Daytime highs will hold steady in the mid-70s to near 80 degrees, while overnight lows drop into the upper 40s and low 50s, creating brisk mornings for commuters and school drop-offs.

An NWS meteorologist explained the setup:

“This is the kind of pattern that gives us a preview of fall — cooler mornings, low humidity, and sunshine dominating much of the day.”

Humidity levels will remain low, making for comfortable afternoons and ideal late-summer conditions for farming, sports, and outdoor recreation.

Slight Chance of Rain Thursday

The only notable change in the pattern arrives on Thursday, when a weak disturbance could spark a few spotty showers. Forecasters currently place the rain chance at about 20 percent, with coverage expected to be minimal and short-lived.

Still, officials suggest keeping an umbrella nearby, especially in areas around Springfield, Bloomington-Normal, Champaign, and Decatur, though most residents won’t see rainfall.

Fog and Cooler Commutes

As temperatures dip into the 40s at night, drivers should prepare for patchy morning fog, especially in rural areas.

The NWS advised:

“Residents should allow extra travel time in the mornings and keep light jackets handy for early commutes or school drop-offs.”

By Wednesday, cities like Champaign and Decatur will reach closer to 80 degrees, while Springfield and Bloomington-Normal hold steady in the 70s.

Forecast Holds Through Friday

The mild, dry stretch will last into Friday before warmer and more humid air returns over the weekend.

  • Tuesday: Sunny, highs 72–76, lows 47–53
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, highs 75–80, lows 54–59
  • Thursday: Partly cloudy, 20% rain chance, highs 77–82, lows 54–59
  • Friday: Mostly sunny, highs 73–79, lows 53–58
  • Saturday: Mild early, warming trend into the weekend
