Flood Advisory Issued for Western North Carolina as Heavy Rain Triggers Safety Alerts

ALLEGHANY COUNTY, N.C. — A flood advisory has been issued for parts of western North Carolina after excessive rainfall caused water to rise in low-lying areas Thursday evening, prompting safety alerts from the National Weather Service.

Advisory Covers Four Counties

The flood advisory was announced by the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Virginia, and is in effect until 8:15 p.m. Thursday for the following counties:

  • Alleghany
  • Ashe
  • Wilkes
  • Yadkin

The alert warns of minor flooding in areas with poor drainage and low elevation. The NWS emphasized the risk of dangerous roadway conditions and encouraged residents to stay cautious. (News & Observer)

Safety Guidelines from the National Weather Service

The NWS advises residents in flood-prone areas or low-lying campgrounds to move to higher ground immediately. Those instructed to evacuate should do so without delay. If time permits, officials recommend disconnecting electrical appliances and locking homes before leaving.

Additional key warnings include:

  • Avoid walking through floodwaters — just 6 inches of moving water can knock someone off their feet.
  • Do not drive through flooded roads, even if they appear shallow — 12 inches of moving water can sweep away most vehicles.

If you become trapped, seek the highest possible point and call 911.

Tips for Driving During Heavy Rain

Drivers are encouraged to use extra caution during downpours. The NWS recommends:

  • Turning on headlights, even during daylight.
  • Avoiding puddles and low road shoulders where water gathers.
  • Staying away from large vehicles that may spray water and reduce visibility.
  • Turning around when encountering a flooded road — don’t risk hydroplaning or engine damage.

Hydroplaning can occur even in a thin layer of water and is most often caused by a combination of high speeds, water depth, and low tire tread. The NWS encourages drivers to slow down and avoid sudden movements on wet roads.
