Georgia DOT Announces Lane Closures for I-16/I-95 Improvement Projects
GEORGIA – Motorists in the state are being urged to prepare for potential delays this week as the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) begins lane closures on major interstates for the ongoing 16@95 Improvement Projects.
The work, which will focus on widening I-16 and reconstructing the I-16/I-95 interchange, will also include bridge work at the I-16/I-516 Interchange. The lane restrictions are expected to affect both daytime and nighttime travel, impacting local commuters and long-distance drivers alike.
Daytime Lane Closures Scheduled
According to the Georgia DOT, daytime closures will run Monday, August 11 through Saturday, August 16, with the following restrictions:
- I-16 Westbound: From the I-16/I-516 Interchange (MP 164) to the I-16/I-95 Interchange (MP 157), 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- I-16 Eastbound: From the I-16/I-95 Interchange (MP 157) to the I-16/I-516 Interchange (MP 164), 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- I-516 Westbound: At the I-16 Interchange from MP 5 to MP 6, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- I-516 Eastbound: At the I-16 Interchange from MP 6 to MP 5, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Nighttime and Double-Lane Closures
Nighttime closures will also occur during the same week, with work scheduled between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. on I-16 and I-516. In addition, double-lane closures are planned for I-95 northbound and southbound near the I-16 overpass:
- I-95 Northbound: MP 98 to MP 100, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- I-95 Southbound: MP 101 to MP 98, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Drivers Urged to Use Caution
The DOT warns that times may shift due to weather and that intermittent traffic pacing, ramp closures, and additional lane restrictions could occur in work zones without prior notice. Motorists are advised to:
- Reduce speed through work zones
- Remain alert for workers and equipment
- Expect delays and plan alternate routes
For real-time traffic updates, drivers can call 511, visit 511ga.org, or use the Georgia 511 mobile app.
