Warmer Weekend Weather Ahead for North Carolina with Sunshine Before Rain Returns

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — After a week of cloud cover and unusually cool August temperatures, North Carolina is in for a warmer weekend with some much-needed sunshine before rain chances return.

Weekend Brings Shift in Weather Pattern

A ridge of high pressure that brought days of overcast skies is beginning to weaken, allowing more sunshine across the Piedmont Triad from Burlington to Boone on Saturday and Sunday. While clouds may linger into Saturday morning in the High Country, forecasters expect midday clearing to give way to brighter skies.

Temperatures, which resembled October highs earlier this week, are expected to climb into the lower 80s this weekend, with some areas reaching the upper 80s by late next week.

Clouds and Spotty Storms Possible

Meteorologists say more clouds could return late Saturday as southeasterly winds carry Atlantic moisture inland, bringing a slight chance of patchy upslope showers into early Sunday. The afternoon may offer a few hours of partly sunny skies — a good window for outdoor plans or pool time.

By Sunday afternoon, isolated pop-up thunderstorms are possible, especially across Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem. Rain chances will increase Monday, with scattered storms expected across the Piedmont Triad, Mountains, and Foothills.

Air Quality Remains Moderate

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality expects air quality to stay in the moderate range through early next week due to smoke from ongoing Canadian wildfires drifting over the Carolinas. Residents can monitor current conditions through the state’s air quality tracking sites.

Tropical Outlook

The National Hurricane Center reports no immediate tropical threats in the Atlantic, with minimal potential for system development over the next several days.
