3 People Injured After Fire Destroys South Carolina Judge’s Home on Edisto Beach

EDISTO BEACH, S.C. — Three people were injured after a fire broke out at a home linked to South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Diane Goodstein on Saturday afternoon. State investigators have launched an inquiry into the cause of the blaze, which happened in the gated Jeremy Cay community.

Fire Breaks Out in Gated Edisto Beach Neighborhood

Fire crews responded to reports of a large home burning off Planters Retreat, where witnesses captured video showing the residence engulfed in heavy flames and smoke. The fire spread quickly, prompting a large response from local and county emergency teams.

According to officials, three people were taken to the Medical University of South Carolina for treatment. One victim was airlifted from the scene, while two others were transported by ambulance. Their conditions have not yet been disclosed.

SLED Investigating Cause of Fire

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) confirmed that it is investigating what caused the fire. KC Campbell, public information officer for Colleton County Fire Rescue, said multiple firefighter-paramedics were sent to help at the scene throughout the afternoon.

Officials have not yet said what may have started the fire or whether any criminal activity is suspected.

Home Linked to Circuit Court Judge Diane Goodstein

Neighbors told local reporters that a judge lives in the area. Property records later confirmed that the home is tied to Judge Diane Goodstein, who serves as a Circuit Court Judge in South Carolina.

The South Carolina Judicial Branch released a statement acknowledging the incident, saying:

“Chief Justice John W. Kittredge is aware of an incident involving Circuit Court Judge Diane Goodstein. At this time, SLED is on the scene and will begin investigating as soon as the fire has been contained. Local law enforcement partners have been alerted and asked to provide extra patrols and security.”

Officials Continue to Monitor Investigation

The Judicial Branch said it will remain in contact with SLED as the investigation continues. Local officials have not yet released details on the extent of the damage or the victims’ conditions.

The investigation remains ongoing as crews work to determine how the fire began.
