Woman Says Grandkids Are Her ‘First Priority’ After Winning Huge NC Lottery Prize

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A North Carolina grandmother is celebrating a life-changing lottery win, saying her grandchildren will be the first to benefit from her $100,000 prize.

$20 Ticket Turns Into $100,000

LuAnn Chico purchased a $20 Ruby Red 7’s scratch-off from a Sheetz convenience store in Winston-Salem on August 22. Within minutes, she realized she had hit a major win.

“I love the Ruby Red’s,” Chico told lottery officials. “You know how there’s one ticket you always latch on to.”

That lucky pick ended up delivering one of the game’s top prizes.

Grandchildren Come First

When asked about her plans for the money, Chico made it clear that her family is her priority.

“I have four grandchildren and they are our first priority,” she said. “This is just going to help so many people.”

Chico added that the win didn’t feel real until she held the oversized ceremonial check at lottery headquarters. “It’s getting real now. I love it,” she said.

After taxes, she took home $71,756.

Game Still Has Big Prizes Remaining

The Ruby Red 7’s scratch-off debuted earlier this month with three $2 million top prizes and nine $100,000 prizes. As of August 22, two of the $2 million prizes and six of the $100,000 prizes remain unclaimed.

The North Carolina Education Lottery continues to encourage responsible play. While many enjoy lottery games as entertainment, officials also remind players that gambling can lead to addiction. Help is available through the national hotline at 1-800-522-4700.
