Authorities say the incident unfolded after the woman allegedly collected money from the suspect and later ignored repeated messages demanding it back.
Police Respond to Report of Shots Fired at Residence
According to local reports, officers responded to a residence in Chattanooga around 12:20 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, after receiving calls about an aggravated assault involving gunfire.
Investigators say the woman told police she had previously met with the suspect, later identified as Malik Chain, and collected $821 from him. Afterward, she allegedly stopped responding to his repeated attempts to contact her.
Suspect Allegedly Returned and Opened Fire on Home
Police allege that Chain later went to the woman’s home, which was occupied at the time by the woman and her family members, and fired multiple gunshots at the residence.
Authorities say the shots struck the front door, a window, and the exterior sides of the home, causing visible damage. Despite the gunfire, police confirmed that no injuries were reported.
Evidence Recovered at the Scene
Investigators say they recovered seven 9-millimeter shell casings approximately 15 feet from the residence, supporting the claim that multiple rounds were fired during the incident.
The scene was processed as part of an ongoing investigation into the shooting and related charges.
Arrest Made and Charges Filed
Chain was arrested the following day, Monday, January 19, 2026, and charged with multiple offenses, including:
- Six counts of aggravated assault
- Reckless endangerment
- Vandalism
He was taken into custody and booked into the Hamilton County Jail, where he remains held as the case proceeds through the court system.
