Strong Cold Front to Bring Freezing Wind Chills Across North Texas on Thanksgiving Week

DALLAS–FORT WORTH, TEXAS — A strong pre-Thanksgiving cold front is sweeping across North Texas, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and bitter wind chills that will make conditions feel near freezing for many residents on Wednesday. Meteorologists say the system has been building for days and will reach peak strength overnight Tuesday into early Wednesday morning.

Cold Air to Sweep Through Overnight

According to the latest data, the cold front will arrive late Tuesday night, ushering in gusty north winds and a noticeable drop in temperatures by sunrise. Morning lows across the Dallas–Fort Worth area are expected to hover in the mid-40s, with wind chills making it feel closer to the 30s in outlying suburbs.

The coldest high temperature so far this season at Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport has been 56°F, but forecasters say Wednesday’s high is unlikely to reach even that. Afternoon temperatures will feel like the 40s across much of the region despite sunshine.

“Many areas in North Texas will wake up to freezing wind chills,” one local meteorologist warned. “Even with sun by the afternoon, the air will remain biting cold.”

Light Freeze Possible in Rural Areas

Forecasters say light freezes are possible early Thanksgiving morning in rural and outlying areas away from the city center. Communities north of the Metroplex, such as Sherman, Paris, and Gainesville, may experience early-morning temperatures in the low 40s to upper 30s, with frost possible on exposed surfaces.

Farther south toward Waco, College Station, and Austin, the chill will ease slightly, though temperatures will still run 10–15 degrees below seasonal averages. A brisk northwest wind will make it feel colder than readings indicate.

Holiday Travelers Advised to Bundle Up

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, travelers are urged to plan for brisk and windy conditions across the region. Those flying out of DFW Airport or driving early Wednesday should expect cold, blustery conditions on the road.

Meteorologists note that this front is part of a broader pattern of cooler-than-average weather spreading across the central United States this week, affecting holiday gatherings and travel across several states.

Residents are encouraged to dress warmly, protect outdoor plants, and check on pets during the cold mornings ahead.
