Spartanburg Weather Alert: Strong Storms May Slow I-85 Travel Thursday Evening

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Drivers in Upstate South Carolina are being warned to prepare for hazardous conditions Thursday as strong thunderstorms threaten to disrupt evening travel.

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg said storms are likely to form after 2 p.m., intensifying during the afternoon and evening commute.

Hazards on Major Roadways

Heavy rainfall and lightning could slow traffic along I-85, I-26, and secondary roads in Spartanburg, Greer, and Boiling Springs. Officials cautioned that ponding on low-lying streets and power outages are possible if storms intensify.

Rain chances are expected to reach 60% by evening, with high temperatures near 84°F before cooling into the upper 60s overnight.

Preparedness Guidance

Emergency officials recommend charging mobile devices, avoiding flooded areas, and postponing non-essential travel during the worst of the storms.

Residents planning outdoor activities should remain cautious, as Friday will bring another round of scattered storms. Conditions may ease slightly by Saturday as drier air filters into the region, though lingering showers could still disrupt weekend events.

A Glimpse of Fall Ahead

While temperatures remain warm this week, overnight lows are forecast to dip into the mid-50s by early next week, providing the first true taste of fall for the Upstate.

Five-Day Spartanburg Forecast

  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high 86°F.
  • Wednesday: Sunny, high 89°F, low 69°F. Slight chance of late showers.
