Southeastern North Carolina Schools Announce Closures Ahead of Tropical Weather Threat

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — School districts and colleges across Southeastern North Carolina are adjusting schedules as a developing tropical system is forecast to bring severe weather early next week.

Brunswick County Schools and College Announce Closures

Brunswick County Schools (BCS) confirmed all schools will be closed to students on Monday, September 29. District leaders said staff will receive updates by email, with families and staff notified of Tuesday’s plans by 5 p.m. Monday.

Similarly, Brunswick Community College announced it will close all campus locations Monday, including the Dinah E. Gore Sports & Aquatics Complex and the Odell Williamson Auditorium. Classes will shift to remote learning where possible.

New Hanover County Schools Planning Adjustments

New Hanover County Schools (NHCS) has not finalized its plans but expects to dismiss students early Monday if forecasts remain severe. Tentative plans call for elementary schools to release at noon and middle and high schools at 1 p.m., with all after-school activities canceled.

NHCS said parents will receive official updates through email, phone calls, and social media by the end of the weekend.

UNCW Moves Family Weekend Indoors

At the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), officials said no closure decisions have been made yet. However, several Family Weekend events have already been moved indoors as a precaution.

Storm Concerns Drive Decisions

The closures and schedule adjustments come as meteorologists warn of a tropical system likely to impact the Carolina coast early next week, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and possible flooding.

Officials say the precautionary closures aim to keep students, staff, and families safe while reducing travel risks during the storm.
