South Carolina Prison Employee Arrested After Allegedly Smuggling ‘Grillz’ to Inmate

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A South Carolina prison employee has been arrested and fired after authorities say she attempted to smuggle contraband jewelry, known as “grillz,” to an inmate at Lee Correctional Institution.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) confirmed that 36-year-old Sharon Elizabeth Smith was taken into custody last Wednesday and charged with criminal conspiracy.

Alleged Smuggling Attempt

Investigators said Smith, who worked as a canteen manager, conspired with others in a plan to deliver the custom jewelry into the prison. According to warrants, officials discovered $2,500 worth of grillz inside her vehicle while it was on prison property.

Following the arrest, SCDC announced that Smith had been terminated from her position at the maximum-security facility.

Ongoing Case

Authorities have not provided additional details about who Smith allegedly conspired with or whether the intended inmate has been identified. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not said if further arrests are expected.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges for South Carolina’s prison system, which has faced repeated cases of contraband smuggling, ranging from cellphones to drugs and weapons.

As the case develops, more information is expected to be released. Do you believe South Carolina prisons are doing enough to prevent contraband from entering facilities? Share your thoughts in the comments at SaludaStandard-Sentinel.com.
