South Carolina Fugitive with Attempted Murder Warrant Arrested During North Carolina Traffic Stop

BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. – A South Carolina fugitive wanted on serious felony charges was taken into custody Saturday after a routine traffic stop in North Carolina turned into a multi-agency arrest.

According to authorities, a North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper stopped 27-year-old Traymon Britt around noon for driving 73 mph in a 55 mph zone. During the traffic check, the trooper discovered Britt was wanted in South Carolina on charges of Attempted Murder, First-Degree Burglary, and Criminal Conspiracy.

Coordinated Arrest Between Agencies

Once the warrant information came back, the Highway Patrol contacted Bertie County Sheriff’s Office deputies for backup. Together, officers quickly secured Britt, who is listed as being from Rich Square, North Carolina.

Britt was booked into the Bertie/Martin Regional Prison with no bond and is now awaiting extradition to South Carolina to face the pending charges.

Serious Charges Await in South Carolina

Details on the original South Carolina case have not yet been released publicly, but the charges suggest the alleged crimes involve violent and coordinated criminal activity. Attempted murder is a felony that can carry decades in prison, while first-degree burglary and criminal conspiracy also bring lengthy potential sentences.

Highway Patrol: Traffic Stops Often Lead to Major Arrests

Law enforcement officials say this arrest highlights how routine traffic enforcement can lead to the capture of dangerous fugitives. Speeding stops are one of the most common ways officers encounter individuals wanted on outstanding warrants.

“When we stop someone for speeding, we never know what we might uncover. In this case, it got a fugitive off the streets,” one law enforcement source noted.

Britt will remain in custody in North Carolina until South Carolina authorities arrange his transfer.
