South Carolina Deputy Killed in Ambush While Serving Warrant Near Lamar

LAMAR, S.C. – A 27-year-old South Carolina deputy was shot and killed early Tuesday morning in what officials are calling an ambush-style attack while attempting to arrest a suspect in a home near Lamar.

Deputy Devin Mason, who had just completed field training last week, was fatally shot around 1:30 a.m. alongside another deputy, who was also injured but remains in stable condition, according to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office.

Deadly Encounter Inside a Home

The two deputies were inside the Lamar-area home to serve an arrest warrant when they were unexpectedly fired upon, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. Cameron Ray Dennett, 25, the suspect wanted on criminal conspiracy, forgery, and computer crime charges, was also killed during the exchange.

Dennett was legally prohibited from owning a firearm, deputies said.

A 28-year-old woman, also facing related charges, was taken into custody during the operation. She was not injured.

A Young Officer’s Life Cut Short

Deputy Mason had only recently graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, with just three months on the job.

“In his time with us, he demonstrated unwavering dedication, integrity, and professionalism,” said Sheriff Michael August.
“Deputy Mason served the people of Darlington County with heart and honor. Though his time with us was far too short, his impact will not be forgotten.”

State Investigation Underway

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is now leading the investigation into the deadly shooting.

Authorities confirmed that this marks the first fatal police shooting in South Carolina in more than three years.
