Sheldon Firefighter Faces Fear of Heights in Viral TikTok, Earns Rescue Certification

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A rookie firefighter from Sheldon Community Fire and Rescue has gone viral after documenting his journey of overcoming a fear of heights during a rope rescue certification course.

Viral TikTok Journey

Avion Anderson, 27, posted a series of TikTok videos last week while participating in the Pro Board Rope Rescue Awareness and Operations training. The five-day course required rappelling and high-angle rescue simulations, which immediately tested Anderson’s fear of heights.

In one clip, Anderson can be heard nervously joking with colleagues as he was lowered by rope: “This is good. Now I can come up?” Another video shows him strapped to a rescue basket dangling in midair, while the final session captured him calmly rappelling down a building, taking steady steps.

His humorous yet determined approach resonated online, generating millions of views and widespread praise.

Community and Department Response

The Sheldon Fire Department shared snippets of Anderson’s videos on its Facebook page, acknowledging his bravery: “Yes, it’s our FF Anderson — he is not a fan of heights but got through it for his certification.”

Anderson told ABC News his story was about more than training: “It’s about facing fears one step at a time.”

Spotlight on Firefighter Training

Assistant Fire Chief Roland Balderas said the exercises, some staged as high as six stories, simulated real rescue scenarios. While Anderson’s videos showed moments of laughter, Balderas stressed the seriousness of the work: “They were having fun in the videos, but it’s serious work.”

The viral moment has drawn international attention to the department, with interview requests coming from outlets including the BBC, European Broadcasting Union, and media in Switzerland, Italy, and Poland.

Inspiring Others

Anderson was one of 20 rookie firefighters in the course, but his story stood out for showing the personal challenges behind professional training. His perseverance has inspired viewers worldwide, shining a light on the risks firefighters face daily and the courage required to meet them.
