Ride-Share Driver Cleared in Fatal Motel Shooting After South Carolina Attack

FORT MILL, S.C. — A deadly encounter at a Motel 6 on Carowinds Boulevard in Fort Mill has ended with no charges filed, after investigators determined a ride-share driver acted in self-defense when he fatally shot a passenger who attacked him with a stun gun.

Shooting Occurred Just After 3 A.M.

The York County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene at 3:32 a.m. on July 27 after receiving reports of a shooting at the motel. When deputies arrived, they found 39-year-old Kendale Richardson Williams of North Carolina had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, whose name has not been released, remained on site and cooperated fully with investigators. He was initially detained pending further inquiry.

Investigators Say the Passenger Was the Aggressor

After gathering evidence and reviewing surveillance footage, authorities determined that Williams was the initial aggressor in the confrontation. According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, Williams had ordered a ride to the Motel 6. Upon arrival, while still inside the vehicle, he reportedly used a stun gun on the driver and then attempted to strangle him.

In response to the sudden and violent attack, the driver drew a firearm he was legally carrying and shot Williams. Investigators later confirmed that the shooting took place entirely within the confines of the vehicle.

Driver Acted in Self-Defense, Officials Say

Following protocol, the sheriff’s office presented the findings to the Sixteenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office. Prosecutors concluded that the ride-share driver acted in lawful self-defense during the life-threatening assault and opted not to file charges.

“This was a clear case of self-defense,” deputies confirmed after the solicitor’s decision was announced.

Community Reaction and Broader Context

The case has sparked discussion about ride-share safety and the unique risks drivers face when picking up unknown passengers. Some in the Fort Mill community have called for increased protections and clearer safety protocols for ride-share workers, especially during overnight hours.

Others have raised concerns about mental health issues and passenger screening, as ride-share platforms continue to grow in popularity even in smaller towns.

Authorities have closed the case, but they continue to encourage ride-share users and drivers alike to report any suspicious behavior or unsafe encounters.
