Officers Open Fire on U-Haul Truck After ‘Direct Threat’ at U.S. Coast Guard Base in California

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. — Officers opened fire on a U-Haul truck after the driver allegedly ignored repeated verbal commands and attempted to reverse into the entrance of a U.S. Coast Guard base in California, officials confirmed late Friday.

According to a statement from the U.S. Coast Guard, the incident occurred after the truck was seen “driving erratically” near the base entrance. When the driver failed to stop and began backing toward the gate, officers deemed the situation a “direct threat” and opened fire.

No personnel were injured in the incident, the Coast Guard said.

Truck Ignored Multiple Commands

Authorities reported that security officers issued “multiple verbal commands” for the driver to stop the vehicle before shots were fired. The truck came to a halt shortly afterward, and the driver was taken into custody.

Officials have not released the identity of the suspect or confirmed whether any injuries were sustained by the individual inside the U-Haul.

“The truck was driving erratically and attempting to back into the base. Officers responded in accordance with standard security protocols,” the Coast Guard said in a brief statement.

Incident Follows Base Protest

The confrontation reportedly followed a protest at the base entrance, where demonstrators had gathered earlier in the day. Witnesses told FOX News that protesters had attempted to block Border Patrol agents from entering the facility.

It is not yet known whether the driver of the U-Haul was connected to the demonstration.

Officials Investigating

The U.S. Coast Guard Investigative Service and local law enforcement are now reviewing security footage and interviewing witnesses to determine the motive and timeline of the incident.

“An internal review is underway, and we are cooperating with federal and local partners to ensure a full accounting of what occurred,” Coast Guard officials stated.

The base, which was temporarily locked down following the event, has since reopened, and operations have resumed as normal.

No Injuries, Heightened Security Remains

Officials emphasized that no Coast Guard or law enforcement personnel were harmed. However, the event prompted heightened security measures around the base perimeter, including additional patrols and controlled access at entry points.

Community residents in the surrounding area were briefly advised to avoid the base entrance during the response but were cleared to return once the scene was secured.

As of Saturday morning, no further threats have been reported, and federal investigators continue to examine the driver’s background and potential motivations.
