North Carolina Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Flood Watch in Effect Through Sunday Afternoon

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. — A Flood Watch is in effect through Sunday afternoon as heavy rain and thunderstorms threaten to drench parts of eastern North Carolina.

The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City warned that rainfall totals could reach six inches in coastal areas, with the Outer Banks and Crystal Coast most at risk.

Outer Banks Expected to See Heaviest Rain

Forecasters say the heaviest downpours will impact Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, while showers may extend inland toward Highway 17.

Officials warned that the combination of heavy rain and high tide cycles could result in localized flooding in low-lying communities.

Travel Impacts

Drivers along U.S. 70, N.C. 12, and Highway 17 are being urged to use caution, as flooding could quickly cover roadways. Ferry services between Ocracoke and Hatteras may also experience delays due to rough waters.

Emergency management teams are advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel, clear storm drains, and be ready for sudden road closures.

Timeline of the Storm

The worst of the rainfall is expected Saturday night into Sunday morning, with showers gradually tapering off by Sunday evening. However, weather officials say additional advisories may be issued if the storm bands linger longer than expected.

Residents across coastal North Carolina are encouraged to share updates on flooding in their areas and discuss how their communities are preparing for worsening conditions. Join the conversation at SaludaStandard-Sentinel.com.
