North Carolina Man Wanted for Child Sexual Battery Arrested at Florida Park
MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — A North Carolina man wanted on charges of sexually assaulting a child has been arrested in Florida after weeks on the run, authorities confirmed Friday.
Fugitive Found at DuPuis Park
The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office located Joseph Windfelder, 39, at the John G. and Susan H. DuPuis Jr. Wildlife and Environmental Area.
Windfelder, who goes by the nickname “Jaws,” had been sought in Forsyth County, N.C., for the sexual battery of a 6-year-old child.
Wanted on Multiple Charges
Deputies said Windfelder was also wanted for failure to appear in court. He had been sentenced to life in prison in North Carolina for the crime but evaded authorities before he could be taken into custody.
Extradition to North Carolina
Following his capture, officials confirmed Windfelder will be extradited back to North Carolina to face the outstanding charges and begin serving his sentence.
The arrest closes a multi-state search for a man accused of committing one of the most serious offenses against a child.
