Mora County, New Mexico Under Flash Flood Warning as Heavy Rain Hits Burn Scar Areas

MORA COUNTY, NEW MEXICO – A Flash Flood Warning is in effect this afternoon for northwestern Mora County, where heavy rainfall is creating dangerous conditions near the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon burn scar.

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque reported radar detection of storms producing up to one inch of rain by 2:37 p.m. Wednesday, with flooding already occurring or expected to begin shortly. The warning remains active until 5:30 p.m. MDT.

Floodwaters and Debris Flows Creating Hazards

Officials warn that floodwaters are pushing debris into tributaries of the Mora River, including Coyote Creek, Sierra Ditch, Canoncito Creek, Encinal Creek, and Rio La Casa. These fast-moving flows may carry rock, mud, and vegetation, creating severe downstream risks.

Communities at Risk

The communities most threatened by flash flooding include:

  • Mora
  • Holman
  • Chacon
  • Cleveland
  • El Turquillo
  • Guadalupita
  • Luceros

Residents in these areas could see roads, driveways, and bridges quickly washed out, with floodwaters pushing debris into low-lying neighborhoods.

Safety Precautions Urged

Emergency officials are urging residents to avoid driving across flooded roads, move immediately to higher ground, and stay prepared for possible evacuation orders. They also warn that additional alerts may be issued if storms continue into the evening.
