Michigan Man Faces Backlash After Giving Free Rides to Schoolchildren During Extreme Cold Weather
MICHIGAN — A Detroit man who offered free rides to schoolchildren during dangerously cold weather is now facing public backlash after Detroit Public Schools issued a warning to families about an unauthorized individual transporting students, despite the driver saying his intentions were purely to keep children safe from the freezing conditions.
School District Issues Alert Over Unauthorized Rides
Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) sent out an automated alert to parents after reports surfaced of a yellow school bus picking up students without district authorization. The message warned families that an individual not affiliated with the school system was offering rides and reminded parents that students should only ride official school buses on assigned routes.
The alert quickly spread among parents and on social media, raising concerns about student safety and triggering widespread discussion about the incident.
Driver Says He Acted Out of Concern for Children’s Safety
The driver at the center of the controversy, Darrell Beaver, later identified himself and explained that he stepped in after noticing children walking to school in extreme cold conditions, with wind chills reported near minus 15 degrees. Beaver said he was alarmed by what he saw and felt compelled to act.
“I just wanted to help,” Beaver said. “It was freezing, and I didn’t feel right watching kids walk in that weather. My only intention was to make sure the kids got to school safely.”
Only One Child Transported With Parent’s Permission
According to Beaver, he picked up one student after receiving direct permission from the child’s parent. He said the student routinely walks to school because the child’s mother does not have access to a vehicle. Beaver emphasized that he did not randomly collect students and that his actions were limited and intentional.
Driver Says He Is a Licensed Transportation Operator
Beaver also stated that he owns EllaMinOP Transportation, a licensed school transportation company. He said he holds proper credentials, insurance, and currently has transportation contracts with a local daycare center.
Despite those qualifications, DPSCD officials maintained that the district acted appropriately by alerting families, stressing that schools must follow strict safety protocols and cannot allow unauthorized transportation under any circumstances.
Community Divided Over Good Intentions vs. Safety Rules
The situation has sparked debate across the Detroit area, with some residents praising Beaver for stepping up during life-threatening cold, while others support the school district’s stance, citing child safety and accountability concerns.
Officials reiterated that while intentions may have been good, families should never allow children to accept rides outside approved school transportation systems.
What Parents Are Being Reminded
School officials urged parents to:
- Ensure children use only district-approved transportation
- Report any unauthorized activity immediately
- Communicate directly with schools if transportation issues arise during severe weather
As winter conditions continue across Michigan, districts say safety procedures remain critical — even during emergencies.
