Michigan Felony Robbery Suspect Dies by Self-Inflicted Gunshot After Standoff With Police at Mattoon, Illinois Hotel

MATTOON, ILLINOIS — A 38-year-old Michigan man wanted in connection with an armed robbery died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a police encounter outside a hotel in Mattoon, authorities said.

The incident began on February 13 after Kalamazoo Public Safety officials in Michigan alerted Mattoon police that felon De’Von Coleman-Canady was believed to be in the area.

Suspect Located at Hotel Parking Lot

Officers located Coleman-Canady inside a vehicle parked at a Best Western hotel. Law enforcement repeatedly ordered him and the driver to exit the vehicle.

According to authorities, the driver complied and was detained without incident. Coleman-Canady, however, remained seated in the passenger side of the car.

Statements Made Before Gunshot

Police said Coleman-Canady told officers he intended to harm himself rather than return to prison. Moments later, officers heard a single gunshot.

Emergency responders arrived, but Coleman-Canady died at the scene.

Prior Felony Conviction

Officials confirmed that Coleman-Canady had a prior felony conviction from September 2021 in LaPorte County related to a robbery that resulted in bodily injury. That conviction established his felony status.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the original Michigan armed robbery case connected to the alert that led officers to Mattoon.

The incident remains under review as part of standard investigative procedures.
