Manhunt Underway After Woman Fatally Shot Inside Hickory Motel Room

HICKORY, N.C. – Police are actively searching for a man wanted in connection with a fatal motel shooting in Hickory on the evening of July 4, after officers discovered a woman unresponsive inside a room at the Deluxe Inn on Highway 70 SW.

The victim, Mary Elizabeth Ervin, 30, of Hickory, was pronounced dead at the scene from what investigators described as an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency responders arrived at the location around 6:41 p.m., after a report came in about an unconscious female in one of the rooms.

Murder Warrant Issued

During the course of their investigation, detectives with the Hickory Police Department identified James David Houser, 30, as the primary suspect in Ervin’s death. A murder warrant has been issued, and police say they are working diligently to track down Houser’s whereabouts.

Authorities did not reveal details about Houser’s relationship with the victim or what may have led up to the deadly shooting.

“We’re urging anyone who knows where Houser may be to contact us immediately,” said a department spokesperson, as reported by Queen City News.

Community Shocked By Holiday Violence

The incident occurred on Independence Day, a time when the Hickory area is typically focused on community celebrations and family gatherings. Instead, this tragedy has prompted concern among residents over growing violence in local motel corridors.

Several neighbors near the Deluxe Inn expressed concern over frequent police visits to the area.

“It’s heartbreaking,” one resident said. “There’s been trouble over there before, but I never thought something like this would happen on the Fourth of July.”

Call for Public Assistance

Police are asking the public to remain alert and report any sightings of Houser. Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or reach the Hickory Police Department directly at 828-328-5551.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

Ongoing Investigation

This remains an active and developing case, and more details are expected as the investigation unfolds. It is unclear at this time whether surveillance footage from the motel has been recovered or if any witnesses have come forward.
