Heavy Snow With Wind Storm

Mammoth Lakes Winter Storm: Up to 3 Feet of Snow, 70 MPH Winds Expected Through Wednesday

MAMMOTH LAKES, CA — A powerful early-season winter storm is set to hit Mono County beginning Monday morning, bringing heavy snowfall and dangerous winds across the Eastern Sierra, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Reno.

The Winter Storm Warning will be in effect from 11 a.m. Monday to 11 a.m. Wednesday, covering elevations above 7,000 feet, with significant snow accumulation and hazardous travel conditions expected.

Up to 3 Feet of Snow Forecast for Higher Elevations

Forecasters say snow totals will range from 8 to 16 inches in most areas, while the Sierra crest could see 1 to 3 feet of accumulation. Lower elevations along Highway 395, including Bridgeport and Lee Vining, may receive between 1 and 4 inches of snow.

The heaviest snowfall is expected between Monday night and Tuesday morning, when snow could fall at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, creating whiteout conditions across mountain passes.

“These are significant snowfall rates for this early in the season,” meteorologists warned in the Country Herald Weather Center update.

High Winds to Create Whiteout Conditions

Wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour are possible along the ridges, increasing the likelihood of blowing snow, fallen branches, and power outages. The NWS cautions that visibility could drop to near zero at times, making driving through Sonora and Tioga Passes extremely dangerous.

The storm is expected to disrupt Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes across the region. Drivers are being urged to delay non-essential travel and stay updated on road closures through Caltrans and the 511 travel advisory line.

Travel and Safety Guidance

Authorities recommend travelers and residents take extra precautions:

  • Avoid mountain travel during peak snowfall hours.
  • Carry emergency supplies, including food, water, blankets, and a flashlight.
  • Keep chains and winter gear readily available.
  • Stay informed on the latest weather updates from NWS Reno and local emergency alerts.

Officials emphasize that conditions could worsen rapidly, especially at higher elevations, and that travelers should plan ahead for extended delays.

The winter storm is the first major system of the season for the Eastern Sierra, signaling an early arrival of snowy conditions across Mammoth Lakes and nearby mountain communities.
