Justice Served: Greensboro Police Arrest Suspect in 2022 Homicide of NC A&T Freshman

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Nearly three years after the tragic death of a North Carolina A&T freshman, police announced the arrest of a 20-year-old suspect in the case, offering long-awaited justice to the victim’s family.

Arrest Made After Years of Investigation

At a press conference Friday, Greensboro Police Assistant Chief Rick Alston confirmed that Rishon Elias Weaver, 20, was arrested without incident and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Kaneycha Turner, 19.

“This arrest, almost three years later after this horrible incident, shows that our detectives are constantly working these cases because this is a priority for them,” Alston said. “They are investigating leads as long as it takes to provide families with justice.”

2022 Mass Shooting

The case stems from a mass shooting on October 25, 2022, in the 900 block of Circle Drive, just off NC A&T’s campus. Six people were shot during the violence. While four survived, Turner and 15-year-old Ronaldlee Snipes died from their injuries.

For now, Weaver is charged only in connection with Turner’s death.

Impact on Campus Safety

Police emphasized the partnership between Greensboro Police and NC A&T, which has strengthened since the shooting. The collaboration has led to enhanced safety precautions on campus and surrounding areas.

“The partnership with NC A&T and the Greensboro Police Department is very important,” Alston said. “I would like to say from the department that I believe it’s stronger than ever.”

Family Reaction

Turner’s mother, Latoya Rucker, has shared her grief since the loss of her daughter, once telling reporters, “I was supposed to be able to protect her, but I couldn’t — now my baby is gone.”

Following Friday’s announcement, Rucker posted on Facebook celebrating the long-awaited update, saying it finally brings her family a measure of peace after years of unanswered questions.

Ongoing Investigation

Police stressed that the case remains active, with investigators still pursuing leads tied to the 2022 shooting.
