High Tides Bring Coastal Flooding, Road Closures Across South Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Coastal communities across South Carolina are facing road closures and flood risks this week as some of the highest tides of the year push water onto streets and low-lying areas.

Charleston Flooding Reaches Moderate Levels

On Monday night, several Charleston-area roads were forced to close due to saltwater inundation. The National Weather Service reports tides at Charleston Harbor could reach 7.5 feet on Tuesday, enough to cause moderate flooding.

Flood advisories are in effect during morning and evening high tides, with 1 to 2 feet of water above ground level possible in coastal neighborhoods and along tidal waterways. Officials warn that saltwater flooding can damage vehicles and structures and urge drivers not to cross closed roads.

Why Tides Are So High

Although South Carolina’s official King Tides occur in October, this week’s high water is caused by the same astronomical alignment of the sun and moon. The combined gravitational pull produces the highest tides of the year, and the effect is worsened by summer sea level rise and persistent northeast winds pushing water ashore.

Impacts Along the Coast

Minor coastal flooding is also expected along the Cape Fear River and across the northeast South Carolina coast through Wednesday morning. Winds from the northeast will also increase rip current risks at beaches this week, with flooding potential peaking again Wednesday if winds shift more directly onshore.

Dry Weather Ahead

Forecasters note that rainfall will not worsen this week’s flooding, as the offshore front is keeping conditions dry. Winds should ease by late week, allowing tides to return to near-normal levels.
