Hailstorm Pounds Northern Arizona University Campus Amid Thunderstorms

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Students at Northern Arizona University (NAU) were caught in severe weather Thursday afternoon as scattered thunderstorms unleashed hail, lightning, and strong winds across the campus.

Quarter-Inch Hail and Frequent Lightning

Videos posted to social media showed hail at least a quarter inch in size pelting the university grounds while students rushed for cover. X user @qu_ack, who filmed the downpour, described the scene as intense, with frequent lightning strikes visible over Flagstaff.

The unusual burst of hail temporarily blanketed parts of the campus, leaving walkways slick and creating hazardous conditions for pedestrians and vehicles.

NWS Issues Weather Advisory

The National Weather Service in Flagstaff issued a Special Weather Statement during the storm, warning that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and scatter unsecured outdoor objects. Officials also cautioned that minor property damage was possible.

Residents were advised to monitor conditions closely and remain alert for rapidly changing weather.

Community Impact

Although no major damage or injuries were reported, students described the storm as disruptive. Classes were briefly affected, with many opting to shelter indoors until the hail subsided.

The quick burst of severe weather is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of Arizona’s monsoon season, when storms can form suddenly and deliver dangerous conditions.
