GIO Foundation Honors Gaston County Child with Memorial Golf Tournament

GASTON COUNTY, NC — A Gaston County family is turning unimaginable grief into meaningful giving, honoring their late son through a new foundation and a heartfelt community event.

Remembering Giovanni Zappitelli

The inaugural GIO Foundation golf tournament and auction took place over the weekend, marking the one-year anniversary of the passing of Giovanni Zappitelli, a four-year-old boy who died in 2024 following a pool accident.

In an emotional tribute, family members described Gio as a joyful child who brought energy and love to those around him. His father, Anthony Zappitelli, shared with Queen City News that while the grief remains, they’ve committed themselves to keeping his legacy alive.

Foundation Born From Tragedy

The GIO Foundation, a nonprofit started by the Zappitelli family, aims to support children across Gaston County and neighboring areas. Its mission includes funding for camps, education initiatives, and charitable drives.

He only had four years here on this earth,” said Jamie Baird, Gio’s aunt. “But our plan is to carry on his name, carry on his legacy, and let people know who he was so his name never fades.

Over $100K Raised for Local Children

Sunday’s event featured a gala-style auction and the kickoff to a two-day golf tournament. Organizers reported raising over $100,000 — funds that will go directly toward youth summer camps, new online learning programs, and the Foundation’s upcoming 2025 Christmas toy drive.

The event was not only a celebration of Gio’s memory but also a gathering of community members determined to make a lasting difference.
