Georgia Man Arrested in Sellersburg After 115 MPH Police Chase With Two Kids in the Car
SELLERSBURG, Ind. — A 35-year-old Georgia man was arrested in southern Indiana after leading police on a high-speed chase exceeding 115 mph — with two children in the car, according to Indiana State Police (ISP).
Chase Reached Speeds Over 115 MPH
The incident happened Saturday evening around 6:30 p.m. when a state trooper monitoring traffic on Interstate 65, north of Sellersburg, clocked a vehicle traveling 45 miles per hour over the speed limit, authorities told WLKY News.
When the officer attempted to initiate a stop, the driver — later identified as Michael Tapia, 35, of Georgia — refused to pull over and continued speeding southbound on I-65. Tapia reportedly took the Sellersburg exit, ran a stop sign, and swerved around other vehicles before looping back onto the interstate northbound.
Children Found in the Vehicle
After several miles, Tapia eventually pulled over to the shoulder, where officers arrested him without further incident. Investigators later discovered that two young children were in the vehicle during the chase.
The children were released to their mother, who lives in central Indiana, police said. Authorities confirmed that no one was injured during the pursuit.
Charges and Ongoing Investigation
Tapia faces multiple charges, including resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and reckless driving. Officials said additional charges related to child endangerment may be considered as the investigation continues.
Police emphasized how dangerous high-speed pursuits can become, particularly when children are involved. “It’s a relief no one was hurt,” one trooper stated, adding that the incident could have ended tragically given the speeds reached on the highway.
Public Safety Reminder
Indiana State Police are reminding drivers that fleeing law enforcement is a felony offense and can carry serious consequences, including prison time and loss of driving privileges.
The investigation remains ongoing, and Tapia is being held pending extradition proceedings.
