Georgia Inmate Found Naked After Escaping Work Detail in Harris County, Flagging Down Vehicles

HARRIS COUNTY, Ga. — A Georgia inmate who walked away from a Harris County Prison work detail Tuesday afternoon was found naked less than 30 minutes later, flagging down passing vehicles on a rural road, according to local officials.

Lockdown and Search After Escape

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies and the Georgia State Patrol responded to the Idle Hour Boat Ramp area in Fortson around 2:26 p.m. after learning that an inmate assigned to an outdoor work crew had fled the site. Authorities immediately issued a Code Red alert and placed nearby schools on lockdown as a precaution.

Deputies quickly established a perimeter near Mountain Drive and Lick Skillet Road, focusing their search in that area.

Bizarre Discovery on Rural Road

Around 2:47 p.m., concerned citizens called 911 after spotting a naked white male flagging down vehicles on Lick Skillet Road. A nearby deputy was alerted and made contact with the man, who was confirmed to be the escaped inmate.

Officials said the inmate was completely unclothed when located but did not resist arrest. He was taken into custody without incident and returned to the Harris County Prison Camp, where he was turned over to staff.

Authorities Praise Citizen’s Quick Action

The sheriff’s office credited a vigilant citizen with helping deputies locate the man so quickly. “We want to thank the individual who called this in right away,” officials said, noting that public awareness played a key role in the safe capture.

Officials did not release the inmate’s name or the reason for his initial incarceration. No injuries or property damage were reported during the incident.
