FLORIDA — A Florida man who deputies say stole a BMW and crashed it at extremely high speed is now facing felony charges after telling authorities he “teleported” into the vehicle. The bizarre incident unfolded in Ormond Beach, where witnesses reported the car traveling at up to 130 mph before slamming into a wooded area.
Suspect Tells Deputies He “Teleported” Into Stolen BMW
Deputies identified the driver as Calvin Curtis Johnson, 36, who appeared confused and disoriented when questioned at the scene. Body-camera footage shows Johnson insisting he had no idea how he ended up behind the wheel. “I don’t know how I got in the car. I teleported or something,” he told a Volusia County sheriff’s deputy.
Officials say the BMW was stolen from Bicentennial Park in Ormond Beach after the owner briefly left the keys inside a closed cupholder while walking his dog.
Witnesses Report Car Reaching 130 mph Before Crashing
A bystander who observed the stolen BMW moments before impact told deputies the car was traveling at dangerously high speeds. After the crash, rescuers had to cut Johnson from the wreckage due to heavy damage. When deputies placed him in handcuffs, Johnson reportedly exclaimed, “You saved me from the aliens!”
Suspect Hospitalized and Expected to Face Multiple Charges
Authorities say Johnson was transported to a hospital for evaluation following the high-speed collision. Once discharged, he will be booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on charges including grand theft of a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended license.
Investigators are continuing to interview witnesses and review body-camera video as they determine whether additional charges may follow.
