Florida Family Reunited with Missing Cat Found 900 Miles Away in North Carolina
BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — A Florida family’s missing cat has been found safe more than 900 miles away in North Carolina, more than a month after they feared she was gone for good.
Vanished on Vacation
The cat, named Xena, disappeared over the Fourth of July weekend while her owners were visiting Corolla on the Outer Banks. She slipped out of her harness and vanished.
Despite searching, the family had to return home to Boynton Beach without her, believing they might never see her again.
Shelter Discovery in North Carolina
On August 27, staff at Currituck Animal Shelter received an injured and underweight cat found just half a mile from where Xena had last been seen.
Shelter director Rachael Stone said Xena had an abscess on her paw but was still vocal and eager for attention. Staff scanned her for a microchip, which confirmed her identity and linked her to her Florida family.
An Emotional Reunion
The family quickly made the drive to North Carolina to retrieve their beloved pet.
“They were in awe. They had kind of lost hope that they were going to find her,” Stone said. Photos posted by the shelter showed Xena receiving vet care before the reunion, followed by joyful images of the family embracing their cat.
Stone added: “It just reinforces how important microchips are, keeping that information correct on the microchips.”
Back Home in Florida
Xena is now back home in Boynton Beach, recovering after her month-long ordeal. Shelter staff expressed relief that she was safely reunited with her owners.
