Fairfield Man Arrested on Hate Crime Charges After Teen Girl Assaulted on Way to School
FAIRFIELD, Calif. — A 37-year-old Fairfield man is facing hate crime charges after police say he attacked a teenage girl on her way to school, allegedly targeting her with racial slurs and physical violence.
According to the Fairfield Police Department, the incident happened Wednesday morning near the 300 block of Dahlia Street, not far from Fairfield High School. Investigators say the suspect, identified as Victor Viera Chavez, confronted the girl with “vulgar, race-based language” before physically assaulting her, apparently because of her perceived immigration status.
Attack Reported to School Officials
The victim managed to reach Fairfield High School, where staff were immediately alerted to the situation. School resource officers responded to assist the student, who was shaken but able to recount what happened.
A witness nearby saw the attack unfold and helped the girl get to safety before contacting authorities. Police quickly launched a hate crime investigation, calling the assault a disturbing and deliberate act of bias.
“No student should ever face violence or intimidation because of who they are or where someone thinks they come from,” a police spokesperson said in a statement.
Suspect Arrested Outside His Home
Following the investigation, Fairfield Police’s Youth Services Unit located and detained Chavez early Thursday morning as he was leaving his home.
He was booked into the Solano County Jail on charges of assault, child endangerment, and hate crimes. Authorities say additional charges could be filed pending a review by the Solano County District Attorney’s Office.
Community Reaction and School Response
The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District confirmed it is offering support services and counseling for the victim and other students affected by the incident.
“We are deeply saddened by this hateful act,” a district spokesperson said. “Our schools must remain safe spaces for every child, regardless of their background.”
Local community leaders have also condemned the attack, emphasizing the importance of education, tolerance, and standing up against hate-fueled violence.
Ongoing Investigation
Police say they are still gathering witness statements and reviewing surveillance footage from the area. They also encourage anyone who may have seen the incident or encountered the suspect near Dahlia Street to contact the Fairfield Police Department.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by California law enforcement agencies to address bias-motivated crimes amid rising reports statewide.
