Exploring Zeke’s Island Reserve: One of North Carolina’s Most Unique Coastal Treasures
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. — Tucked just south of Wilmington, Zeke’s Island Reserve spans 1,635 acres of diverse habitats — from salt marshes and tidal flats to grasslands, dunes, and beaches — making it one of the “most unusual areas” of the state’s coastline, according to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality. Donated by conservationist Walter Davis in 1980, the protected area is part of the state’s coastal reserve network and offers both ecological and historical significance.
A Haven for Wildlife
The reserve is home to more than 200 bird species and 100 species of fish, along with diamondback terrapins and loggerhead sea turtles. Seasonal nesting areas are protected, and visitors are urged to respect posted restrictions to avoid disturbing wildlife. Its unique location and diverse ecosystems attract birdwatchers, anglers, and nature lovers year-round.
The Historic “Rocks”
One of the reserve’s most striking landmarks is The Rocks, a man-made rock wall built in 1881 to reduce shoaling in the Cape Fear River. While the structure is a popular fishing spot, it is not designed for walking and should not be used to access the reserve.
The Rocks are best viewed at low tide, when more of the wall is visible against the coastal backdrop.
Getting There and Visiting Tips
Located just beyond the Fort Fisher ferry terminal at Federal Point, Zeke’s Island Reserve can be reached by boat, on foot, or by off-road vehicle to its beach strand. The reserve also contains three islands that are accessible only by boat. Parking and a boat ramp are available on the northern edge, but there are no public restrooms.
The area is open to visitors year-round during daylight hours. However, camping, fires, and fireworks are prohibited. Officials stress the importance of not littering, disturbing plants, or feeding wildlife.
Why It’s Worth the Trip
Whether you’re casting a fishing line, hiking along its dunes, or simply soaking in the scenery, Zeke’s Island Reserve offers a rare glimpse into the natural beauty and biodiversity of North Carolina’s coast. It’s a destination that blends pristine landscapes, rich history, and ecological importance, making it a must-see for residents and visitors alike.
