Durham County Sheriff Warns Lawmakers Are Stripping Police of Tools and Resources
DURHAM, N.C. – The Durham County sheriff is warning that state lawmakers are undermining public safety by taking away resources and limiting tools that police depend on.
Sheriff Clarence Birkhead argued this week that a wave of legislative changes at the state level is leaving law enforcement officers under-equipped to respond to rising violent crime.
Sheriff’s Concerns About Legislative Actions
Birkhead said the state legislature has approved measures that weaken police authority and limit their ability to enforce laws effectively. He pointed to restrictions on certain traffic enforcement practices, changes to pretrial detention policies, and funding shifts that reduce money available for local agencies.
“We are being asked to keep communities safe while our toolbox is being stripped bare. That is not fair to our officers or to the people we serve,” Birkhead said in a statement carried by WRAL.
He added that many of the tools being removed have been “proven effective in deterring crime and keeping dangerous individuals off the streets.”
