‘Drop the Gun’: SAPD Releases Video of Fatal Shooting After East Side Road Rage Incident

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Newly released video from the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) shows the moment officers fatally shot a man who raised a shotgun toward them outside his East Side home after a reported road rage incident.

Road Rage Call Turns Deadly

Police say the incident began on the morning of August 29, when Jaime Gonzalez, 41, was reported driving erratically and clashing with two other motorists. Witnesses said Gonzalez followed the drivers to Cherry Street and confronted one near a skate park before retreating into his home.

A 911 caller told dispatchers Gonzalez was pointing a shotgun at people. Moments later, callers reported he fired a shot into the air.

Confrontation at the Home

SAPD officers arrived at around 10:30 a.m., surrounding the home. Body cam footage did not capture the confrontation due to officer positioning, but dash cam video released Saturday begins as officers attempted to de-escalate the situation.

On loudspeakers, police repeatedly ordered Gonzalez to come out unarmed. Instead, dash cam footage shows him opening a side door and positioning his shotgun toward officers.

Drop the gun!” officers shouted multiple times before opening fire.

Officers Fire, Gonzalez Killed

Five officers — Tyler Brown, Marco Trevino, Matthew Olivares, Joseph Orozco, and Steven Flores — discharged their weapons, striking Gonzalez.

Officers immediately attempted life-saving measures until EMS arrived, but Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or bystanders were injured.

Investigation Underway

SAPD said the officers involved, each with five to seven years of experience, have been placed on administrative duty pending investigation.

Both the SAPD Shooting Team and the Internal Affairs Unit are reviewing the case, and findings will be forwarded to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office.

The release of the footage is part of SAPD’s Critical Incident Video Release Procedure, designed to provide transparency in cases involving deadly force.
