Columbia Police Say Two Deadly Shootings Were ‘Justifiable Homicides’

COLUMBIA, SC — Two deadly shootings that occurred earlier this year in Columbia have now been ruled as justifiable homicides, according to the Columbia Police Department (CPD).

The decision comes after weeks of investigation into two separate incidents where individuals claimed self-defense against alleged aggressors.

May shooting at Carolina Lodge

The first case occurred in May at the Carolina Lodge, formerly known as the Coronet Motel, located on North Main Street. Officers responding to the scene found a man dead in the motel parking lot.

He was later identified as Anthony Doctor by the Richland County Coroner’s Office. According to CPD, Doctor was the aggressor during the confrontation, and the individual who shot him acted in defense.

ShotSpotter alert leads to second case

In a separate case on Booker Street, CPD was alerted by a ShotSpotter report — a system that detects and locates gunfire — which led officers to the 2500 block where they discovered two people injured with gunshot wounds to the lower body.

A third victim, 44-year-old Timothy Jacobs, was found with a more serious gunshot wound and later died at a local hospital.

Police determined Jacobs had been the primary aggressor in the confrontation and that the shooter had fired in defense. On Monday night, the Columbia Police Department confirmed via ABC Columbia that both deaths have now been officially classified as justifiable.

“Both male victims were able to protect themselves from Doctor and Jacobs,” CPD said.
