Civilians Rescue Ride-Share Driver After Car Plunges Into South Carolina Creek
ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. — Two civilians are being hailed as heroes after they leapt into action Saturday night to save a ride-share driver whose vehicle plunged into a creek near a Charleston-area marina.
Car Crashes Into Morgan Creek
According to Isle of Palms police, the incident occurred just after 9 p.m. on August 23 at the Isle of Palms Marina. Officials said the driver, who has not been identified, was navigating the area during a heavy rainstorm when his visibility was severely limited. He mistakenly drove from the parking lot onto a boat ramp and into Morgan Creek.
Dramatic Rescue Captured on Camera
Security footage released by police shows the driver’s car sinking as bystanders rushed to help. Two men at a gathering nearby immediately jumped into action. One of them vaulted over a railing into the water, while the other ran down the ramp and waded in. Together, they managed to pull the driver from the car before it became fully submerged.
“We are extremely grateful to the two men who acted quickly and heroically to save a life in need,” the Isle of Palms Police Department said in a statement.
Driver Treated for Injuries
The rescued driver was transported to a hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries, according to authorities. Police confirmed that no one else was in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Police Stress Weather Dangers
Isle of Palms Police Chief Kevin Cornett said the incident highlights the risks of driving in severe weather. “This incident underscores the dangers of driving during severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and flooding, particularly at night. Water can quickly obscure where the roadway ends and make it difficult to gauge depths,” Cornett noted.
Community Response
The marina area, popular with both locals and tourists, has seen similar close calls during storms, though rarely as dramatic as this weekend’s rescue. The bravery of the two good Samaritans has since drawn widespread praise from residents and social media users alike.
