Cascades Sells Barnwell County Tissue Mill in $12M Deal, Bringing 50 Jobs to South Carolina
BARNWELL COUNTY, SC — Canadian paper packaging firm Cascades Inc. has officially sold its recycled tissue mill in Barnwell County to a U.S.-based tissue manufacturer, paving the way for 50 new jobs and renewed investment in South Carolina’s manufacturing sector.
ST Group expands footprint with third mill
The ST Group, a North American away-from-home tissue producer, completed the purchase through its newly formed subsidiary, Barnwell Tissue Solutions, according to Recycling Today. The acquisition marks the company’s third tissue facility, expanding its total production capacity to 220,000 tons annually.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster confirmed the $12 million deal, praising it as a “vote of confidence in South Carolina’s business climate and manufacturing expertise.”
Mill expected to be operational by year’s end
Barnwell Tissue Solutions plans to restart the mill before the end of 2025, according to company owner Sahil Tak. “This acquisition enables us to stay one step ahead of our customers’ growth ambitions,” Tak said in a statement. “We’re excited to become part of the Barnwell County community.”
Tak also thanked Cascades for their support during the transition, noting that the company will continue to source tissue from the Barnwell facility as part of their ongoing supply network.
Facility features hybrid technology and expansion room
Originally equipped in 2016, the Barnwell mill features a 110-inch Valmet hybrid QRT/DCT tissue machine capable of producing 30,000 tons annually. The site also includes a recycled fiber deinking mill with a capacity of 40,000 tons per year, enabling the production of both virgin and recycled tissue products.
The 300,000-square-foot property has built-in warehouse space and room for future expansion, which Tak says will help them scale operations over time.
ST Group continues customer-focused expansion
Founded in 2007, the ST Group previously acquired mills in Oconto Falls, Wisconsin and Franklin, Virginia. Its Wisconsin site features two high-speed tissue machines and a wastewater treatment facility, while the Franklin mill was revitalized in 2013.
“This is a strategic investment that reflects our long-standing philosophy of customer-driven growth,” the company said.
Governor McMaster echoed that sentiment: “By revitalizing an existing tissue mill in Barnwell County, Barnwell Tissue Solutions will restore 50 valuable jobs to the community. We are proud to welcome this company to our state.”
