Blue Alert Issued in North Carolina After Georgia Officer Shot; Armed Suspect Captured

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – A statewide Blue Alert was issued in North Carolina late Friday after a police officer in north Georgia was critically injured in a shooting. Authorities confirmed that the suspect has since been captured.

Officer Shot in McCaysville, Georgia

The shooting happened just after 11:10 p.m. Friday in McCaysville, Georgia, a community located just two miles from the North Carolina border.

Capt. Brantley Worley of the McCaysville Police Department was responding to a call for service when he was shot in the throat, leaving him critically injured.

Blue Alert Issued in North Carolina

On Saturday, police identified the suspect as Timothy Craig Ramsey, 26, who was believed to have fled toward Cherokee County, North Carolina.

Ramsey was described as wearing a bright green chemical-resistant suit and carrying a dark-colored motorcycle helmet when he ran from the scene, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

North Carolina officials issued a Blue Alert, warning residents the suspect was considered “armed and extremely dangerous.”

Suspect Captured

Around 6 p.m. Saturday, officials confirmed Ramsey had been captured. He now faces charges of aggravated assault with intent to murder a police officer, stemming from the Friday night attack.

Outpouring of Support

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation released a statement offering support for the McCaysville Police Department and Capt. Worley’s family:

“Our hearts are with the McCaysville Police Department. We extend our prayers to Capt. Brantley Worley, his family, and his co-workers during his recovery.”

In addition to North Carolina’s statewide alert, Georgia residents in Fannin, Gilmer, and Union counties also received emergency alerts on their phones.
