At Least Four Dead, Multiple Missing After Flash Floods Devastate Arizona
GLOBE, Ariz. — At least four people are confirmed dead and several remain missing after catastrophic flash floods struck Arizona late Friday, overwhelming communities across Gila County and beyond.
Deaths Confirmed in Globe and Scottsdale
Mayor Al Gameros of Globe said three residents were found dead after raging waters swept through his community, describing the tragedy as “an unthinkable, devastating event.”
A fourth victim was discovered Saturday morning in Scottsdale, pinned beneath a walkway bridge near a vehicle that had been partially submerged the night before, according to local emergency officials.
State of Emergency Declared
Governor Katie Hobbs declared a state of emergency for Gila County, releasing $200,000 in state resources to support ongoing search, rescue, and recovery efforts.
“I’m heartbroken by the devastation in Gila County,” Hobbs said. “My thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones and the residents whose lives have been impacted. We will continue to work around the clock to ensure impacted communities receive the support they need.”
Dangerous Conditions Across Gila County
The Gila County Public Health & Community Services Department warned residents to avoid flood-impacted areas and follow evacuation instructions.
Officials noted that nearly 1,000 propane tanks were swept from a distribution facility, creating additional hazards. Portions of U.S. 60 also remain closed due to debris and flood damage.
Shelters Open as Search Continues
The National Weather Service extended flash flood warnings through Sunday, while the Arizona Department of Transportation was called to inspect bridges and roadways.
Emergency shelters were opened at High Desert Middle School and Lee Kornegay Intermediate School for displaced families.
Mayor Gameros urged residents to remain patient during ongoing operations, noting that rescue teams continue searching for those still unaccounted for.
Community Reels from Disaster
Footage shared by local outlets showed submerged vehicles and residents wading through waist-deep water. The flooding has left many without homes or transportation as recovery begins.
