Armed Woman Shot by Officer After York County Police Chase, Authorities Confirm
YORK COUNTY, S.C. – An intense law enforcement response unfolded in York County Saturday evening after an armed woman allegedly fired from a vehicle, led deputies on a high-speed chase, and was ultimately shot by an officer after refusing to surrender.
The incident began around 6:00 p.m. near Nassaw Circle and Young Warrior Town Drive, when York County deputies received reports of a woman in a burgundy Jeep shooting out of the vehicle, according to Queen City News.
Suspect Allegedly Pointed Gun at Deputy
Deputies quickly located the suspect’s Jeep on Noostee Town Drive. When a deputy attempted to approach, the woman allegedly pointed a firearm directly at him, prompting her to flee the scene.
The pursuit escalated as authorities deployed stop sticks in an effort to disable the vehicle’s tires. The Rock Hill Police Department, K9 units, and SWAT operators joined the pursuit as it traveled through multiple areas.
The woman ultimately came to a stop near Cheryl Lynn Drive and Sturgis Road, but the confrontation was far from over.
Standoff Ends in Gunfire
Deputies began a series of negotiations with the woman, attempting to de-escalate the situation and convince her to exit the vehicle peacefully. However, according to officials, she refused to respond to any commands or communication efforts.
After a prolonged standoff, officers said a Rock Hill police officer fired a single round, striking the woman in the shoulder. The decision to fire came after the suspect remained noncompliant and posed an active threat, according to preliminary reports.
Suspect Hospitalized in Stable Condition
After the shooting, law enforcement rendered medical aid on the scene before the suspect was transported to a nearby hospital. As of Sunday morning, she is reported to be in stable condition. Her identity has not been publicly released.
No officers or deputies were injured during the incident.
In keeping with departmental policy and standard protocol, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has been requested to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.
Developing Investigation
York County Sheriff’s Office and Rock Hill PD confirmed that the case is being treated as an active and ongoing investigation, and further details will be made public as they become available.
“This was a dangerous and dynamic situation,” a law enforcement spokesperson said. “Thankfully, no officers were hurt, and the public was not endangered beyond the initial shots fired.”
