Arkansas Couple Arrested After Allegedly Trying to Sell Two-Month-Old Baby for $1,000 and Beer, Police Say

ROGERS, Ark. — A couple from Rogers, Arkansas has been arrested after allegedly trying to sell their two-month-old baby in exchange for a six-pack of beer and later $1,000, according to investigators.

Authorities said the disturbing incident took place at a local campground, where a concerned bystander noticed the infant appeared to need medical attention and immediately contacted police. The baby was later hospitalized for treatment.

Parents Accused of Attempting to Trade Baby for Cash and Alcohol

Investigators identified the suspects as Shalene Ehlers, 20, and Darien Urban, 21. Police say the pair allegedly agreed to give up their parental rights in exchange for alcohol and money.

The couple reportedly signed a handwritten letter surrendering custody of the baby, which they initially claimed was part of an adoption process. However, authorities later obtained video evidence showing the couple signing the agreement as part of an illegal transaction, disproving their claims.

Infant Found in Poor Health

When officers arrived, witnesses described the baby as being in visible distress with a severe diaper rash and other signs of neglect. The child was taken to a nearby hospital for immediate care.

Urban and Ehlers were both arrested on child endangerment-related charges. Police said Urban has since been released on bail, while Ehlers remains in custody as the investigation continues.

Investigation Ongoing

Police have not released details about who reported the case, but officials confirmed that the baby has been placed in protective care under the supervision of child welfare authorities.

The Rogers Police Department continues to investigate, with additional charges possible as evidence is reviewed.

“This was a heartbreaking situation,” one investigator said. “The quick actions of a concerned citizen likely saved this infant’s life.”
