Two Men Arrested After Gunfire Erupts at Teen’s Birthday Party in Meriwether County

GEORGIA — What was supposed to be a small family bonfire in Meriwether County turned into a night of chaos after gunfire erupted at a teenager’s birthday party Saturday, leaving one man injured and two suspects behind bars.

According to Meriwether County Sheriff Chuck Smith, the celebration quickly got out of control after social media posts spread online, drawing more than 100 people — many of whom were strangers to the property owners.

Gunfire Breaks Out at Teen’s Party

Deputies responded after reports of shots fired during the gathering. Sheriff Smith told FOX 5 Atlanta that the event was originally meant to be a small bonfire for the homeowner’s niece, but the situation escalated when uninvited guests began arriving from across the region — some from as far away as South Fulton County.

“They didn’t know these people. Didn’t know their intentions,” Smith said. “And when these people saw it broadcast on social media, they were looking for a place to party.”

An 18-year-old man was struck in the head by a bullet and rushed by friends to a nearby fire station before being transferred to Piedmont Newnan Hospital. He was later moved to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and is now recovering after doctors said he’s expected to make a full recovery.

Two Suspects in Custody

Deputies arrested Deadra Ransom, 20, of LaGrange, and Akevion Bowles, 22, of Luthersville, on aggravated assault charges. Investigators believe more weapons may have been discharged and said additional charges could follow as they continue reviewing evidence and witness statements.

Property Owner Could Face Charges

Authorities are also investigating whether the homeowner who hosted the party had the proper county permits to allow a gathering of more than 100 people. Sheriff Smith said that depending on the results of that review, the property owner may face potential violations or fines.

The sheriff’s office is urging the public to be cautious about advertising private events on social media, warning that such posts often attract large, unmanageable crowds and can quickly lead to violence.
