Upstate South Carolina Braces for First Freeze of the Season Next Week

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Residents across Upstate South Carolina should prepare for the first true taste of winter next week, as temperatures are expected to plunge below freezing by Monday night, according to FOX Carolina meteorologist Kendra Kent.

Kent issued a First Alert forecast on Sunday, warning that the region is on track to see its first freeze of the season starting late next Monday, with overnight lows ranging from the upper 20s to low 30s.

Forecast: Temperatures to Drop Below Freezing

The forecast map shared by FOX Carolina shows the coldest temperatures expected in the mountain and foothill regions:

  • Asheville and Franklin: 26–30°F
  • Greenville, Anderson, Spartanburg, and Laurens: 30–34°F
  • Newberry, Greenwood, and Elberton: Near freezing

Meteorologists say the incoming cold front could bring the most widespread frost and freeze event so far this fall, marking a sharp shift from recent mild temperatures across the Carolinas.

“Our first freeze will be possible in the Upstate a week from tonight,” Kent wrote in her forecast update. “This looks like the first legitimate cold blast of the season.”

Protect Plants, Pets, and Pipes

Residents are being urged to take precautions ahead of the cold snap. A freeze warning may be issued closer to next week if models continue to indicate subfreezing conditions lasting several hours overnight.

Officials recommend:

  • Covering sensitive plants or bringing them indoors
  • Protecting outdoor faucets and exposed pipes
  • Ensuring pets and livestock have access to shelter and fresh water
  • Checking heating systems and thermostats before the freeze arrives

First Sign of a Seasonal Shift

The potential freeze comes as Upstate South Carolina transitions into the early winter pattern typical for mid-November. Meteorologists note that this is right on schedule for the area’s average first frost dates, which usually occur between November 6 and November 15.

Forecasters will continue to monitor temperature trends throughout the week to determine how widespread the freezing conditions may become.

Looking Ahead

While the cold will likely be brief, Kent says the temperature dip could mark the start of a colder mid-November pattern, with more chilly nights expected leading into Thanksgiving week.
