Kershaw County Coroner Seeks Help Identifying Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run
KERSHAW COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA — Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying a woman who was killed in a hit-and-run crash along U.S. 601 on Saturday night, according to the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 9:40 p.m. near Porter Cross Road, when a pedestrian walking along the northbound side of the highway was struck by an unknown vehicle that fled the scene.
Victim Pronounced Dead After Being Taken to Hospital
Emergency crews responded quickly and transported the woman to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Authorities have not yet identified the driver or the vehicle involved.
Kershaw County Coroner David West described the victim as a Black woman between 45 and 55 years old, with short hair, a medium build, and freckles on her cheeks and nose. He said his office is working with state investigators to determine her identity and contact her family.
Officials are urging anyone with information about a missing person who matches that description to call the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office at 803-572-2003.
Highway Patrol Investigating Fatal Hit-and-Run
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the fatal incident. Troopers say they are reviewing nearby surveillance footage and seeking witnesses who may have seen the collision or any suspicious vehicles in the area around the time of the crash.
Officials noted that pedestrian fatalities continue to be a growing concern across South Carolina, particularly on unlit rural highways. They urge both drivers and pedestrians to remain alert and use extra caution after dark.
Community Urged to Come Forward With Information
The coroner’s office emphasized that public assistance is vital to help bring closure to the woman’s loved ones. “We’re asking anyone with even the smallest piece of information to come forward,” West said. “Someone may recognize her description or know a family searching for a missing relative.”
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash and are working to identify the suspect vehicle. No arrests have been made.
Residents with any information about the incident or missing individuals in the area are encouraged to contact investigators immediately.
